The Three Shadows Xiamen Photography Art Centre hosted a unique artistic event—Zhuo Yue's original sound theatre 'Healing Field.' As a highlight of the 2025 Jimei x Arles International Photography Festival, this performance not only showcased Zhuo's distinctive talent in music and sound art but also immersed the audience in a dreamlike soundscape through innovative interactive elements.

Inspired by Music Therapy, Infused with the Essence of Arles
Zhuo Yue drew inspiration from the concepts and methods of music therapy, integrating them with the themes of the Jimei x Arles International Photography Festival to create this groundbreaking sound theatre. Centred around improvisation, the performance blended electronic acoustic music with sound props, breaking the boundaries of traditional concerts. The audience was not merely a listener but an active participant, becoming 'co-dreamers' who collaborated with the artist to weave a healing journey through sound.
Four Chapters of Interaction and Improvisation
The performance was divided into four chapters, each filled with creativity and interaction. The first chapter, 'Counting Sheep,' began in a lighthearted manner, with the audience participating by pressing sound buttons that emitted sheep noises, creating a serene and dreamy atmosphere. This was followed by Bach's Goldberg Variations, during which the audience was invited on stage to doodle on a giant musical score with crayons. Zhuo then improvised based on the changes in the score, seamlessly merging the audience's emotions with the music.

In the latter half of the performance, Zhuo innovatively incorporated music therapy instruments such as rain sticks and ocean drums. These instruments not only produced unique sounds on stage but were also passed to the audience, creating a three-dimensional soundscape both on and off the stage. Accompanied by the sounds of waves and whale calls played through speakers, Zhuo improvised on the double bass, transporting the audience into a natural soundscape. Notably, the double bass was placed horizontally on a light blue cloth surrounded by flower petals, symbolizing a 'boat floating on water,' with Zhuo as the 'rower' and the rain sticks and bow as 'oars.' This poetic imagery added depth and philosophical reflection to the performance.

Nanyin and Wind Chimes: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
In the final chapter, students from the Nanyin Yayi Xiamen Class took the stage to perform the classic Nanyin piece Going to Qin (去秦邦). As they played, Zhuo slowly exited the venue with an ocean drum, symbolizing the story of Su Wu leaving ancient China to wander. Finally, he returned to the stage holding a set of wind chimes, and the performance concluded with the ethereal sounds of the chimes, bringing the sound theatre to a perfect close.

Audience Enthusiastically Responds to Art and Healing
The performance attracted nearly a hundred audience members, who were not only immersed in the sound world created by Zhuo but also experienced the healing power of art through interactive participation. Many attendees expressed that the performance redefined their understanding of sound and provided them with a sense of inner peace and resonance.
The successful staging of Zhuo Yue's 'Healing Field' original sound theatre not only added a highlight to the Jimei x Arles International Photography Festival but also explored new possibilities for the integration of contemporary sound art and music therapy. This performance was not just an auditory feast but also a journey of spiritual healing, demonstrating the infinite potential of art to connect humans with nature, tradition with modernity.
